Agricultural economics is a field of study that focuses on the application of economic principles and practices to optimize agricultural production and resource use. Agricultural economics encompasses aspects of microeconomics, macroeconomics, and international trade and also includes environmental and social issues such as food security, sustainable development, and rural poverty alleviation. This book explains various aspects of the subject in simple, lucid and non-technical language. It would connect teachers and students of the subject to the basic concepts, components and processes, so outlined. This book based on National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 syllabus and regulations, is designed for students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate courses in agricultural economics, and would expose and equip them with a framework and understanding of the complex interactions between the agricultural sector, economy, and the society. The book contains 18 chapters which have been organized into 4 theme parts. Part I (chapters 1 to 5) is titled, ‘Fundamentals of Agricultural Economics/Agriculture and Economic Development’. It focuses on introduction to agricultural economics; agricultural economics: principles and theoretical aspects; economic systems: concept and features; public expenditure and welfare economics; and agriculture and economic development. Part II (chapters 6 to 8) is titled, ‘Farm Management, Production and Resource Economics’. It explains and examines the theoretical settings related to production economics in agriculture; farm management: concept, scope and importance; and agriculture and resource economics. Part III (chapters 9 to 13) is titled, ‘Agricultural Finance and Cooperation’. It is related to agricultural finance and credit: meaning, scope, and sources; NABARD and rural cooperative credit institutions; agriculture credit delivery ecosystem: regional rural banks (RRBs), kisan credit cards (KCCs), micro finance, and self-help groups (SHGs); cooperatives: philosophy and forms; and cooperative movement: pre-Independence period and post-Independence developments.Part IV (chapters 14 to 18) is titled, ‘Agricultural Marketing, Trade and Prices’. It includes agricultural marketing: nature, significance and channels; international trade, WTO, GATT and agriculture; agricultural exports, imports, and foreign direct investment (FDI); minimum support price (MSP) and agricultural price policy; and public distribution system (PDS) and food subsidy. Agricultural economics has been an evolving subject and hence the study of allocation, distribution, and utilization of resources used, along with the commodities produced by farming, would interest a cross-section of readers to keep themselves abreast of the issues and challenges involved and address the same either through policy making or academic pursuits. While analyzing factors such as market trends, policy impacts and technological advancements to improve the efficiency and sustainability of the agricultural sector, agricultural economics plays a vital role in the economics of development.
