എം. സുകുമാരൻ വളരെ കൂടുതലൊന്നും എഴുതിയിട്ടില്ല. മുപ്പത്തഞ്ചിൽ പരം ചെറുകഥകളും 'ശേഷക്രിയ' ഉൾപ്പെടെ ഏതാനും ലഘു നോവലുകളും മാത്രമേ അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ എഴുപത്തഞ്ച് വർഷക്കാലത്തെ ജീവിതകാലത്ത് രചിച്ചുള്ളൂ. ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ അവസാനകാലത്തെ കാൽ നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ ഒന്നുമെഴുതിയില്ല. ആ കടുത്ത മൗനത്തെ ഭേദിക്കുവാൻ മാധ്യമങ്ങളുടെയും പ്രസാധകരുടെയും നിരന്തരമായ വലിയ പ്രേരണകൾക്കും പ്രലോഭനങ്ങൾക്കും സാധിച്ചില്ല. തന്റെ ജീവിതശുദ്ധിയിലും നിലപാടുകളിലും ഉറച്ചു വിശ്വസിച്ചതുപോലെ തന്റെ കലയുടെ വിശുദ്ധിയിലും അദ്ദേഹം വിശ്വസിച്ചു. തന്റെ ഉള്ളിൽനിന്നും പൊട്ടിപ്പുറപ്പെടാത്ത ഒരു ആശയവും അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ കലയിൽ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചില്ല.
